What's the Procedure Like?
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that requires either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision under the nipple, under the breast itself or in the armpit.
The implant or fat is inserted into a pocket between the pectoral (chest) muscle and the breast tissue or under the muscle itself. The incisions are closed with sutures, skin adhesive, or special tape. Dressings and sometimes a special bra are applied. Most people go home within a few hours after surgery; full recovery takes a few weeks.
Who is a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation should only be performed because the patient wants it done. Good candidates are physically healthy, have reasonable expectations about the results and have fully developed breasts.
Patients who have small breasts, or whose breasts have lost shape and volume after pregnancy, weight loss or with aging may be candidates for augmentation surgery. Asymmetrical breasts or breasts that did not develop normally can also be corrected with augmentation surgery.
What Can I Expect From Breast Augmentation?
Like any cosmetic surgical procedure, breast augmentation is most effective in people who are otherwise healthy, have good skin, and muscle tone.
It's unrealistic to expect that breast augmentation can completely restore the appearance of youthful breasts. The surgery may cause changes in sensation, especially in the nipple area. What is a Breast Lift?

What to expect after a mastopexy/breast lift?
After surgery, the breasts will have antibiotic ointment placed over the incisions and be wrapped with ace wrap bandages. Patients will typically be seen within 1-3 days post operatively and bandages will be removed and inspected.
Sutures are typically absorbable and will be inspected post operatively to insure that they are healing correctly but typically do not need to be removed. The nipple position and also blood supply is verified and examined at this time as well as the general breast shape and symmetry. Patients should expect to be swollen and have bruising of the breasts which can last upwards of 1-2 weeks but is variable. The shape, size and general position of the breasts will change over the span of 4-6 weeks but patients will be seen in the office during this time period.
Patients are given post-operative instructions and pain medications/antibiotics after the surgery. Most people can expect to return to full normal activities within 2-3 weeks after surgery.

Breast Reduction Procedure
Depending on your specific personal procedure, a breast reduction surgery usually involves general anesthesia and can be done in an outpatient facility or overnight in the hospital. The procedure takes between two to five hours.
Your surgeon can make an incision around your nipple and downward on the breast to remove extra skin tissue and fat from your breasts and reposition your nipple often to a higher, more forward position on your chest. The breast tissue and skin is then reshaped. The areolas can also be decreased to a more proportional size.
Drainage tubes may be used. Your breasts will be stitched up and wrapped in special gauze. It may be a good idea to wear a surgical bra for support.
Types of breast reduction
There are several different surgical techniques for breast reduction that will result in the best desired outcome. One of the most common methods is the inferior pedicle, which re-positions the nipples and reduces large, saggy breast tissue.
A vertical breast reduction involves a moderate decrease in the size of their breast, including reducing mild sagging. Also known as a lollipop breast reduction, there is some scarring on the breast usually below the nipple where it can be concealed underneath a bra or bikini top. Vertical breast reduction works well with patients who have good elasticity and do not have too much excess breast tissue.
